Bowles Hall

Bowles Hall, the oldest residence hall in the UC system, was built in 1929 in memory of regent Phillip Ernest Bowles and founded upon the principle of "Education Through Fellowship." For decades, Bowlesmen enjoyed an environment of scholarship, camaraderie, and a rich social life that would stay with them the rest of their lives.

In recent years, the Bowles culture has been under attack from Berkeley's administration. Excessive regulation put a damper on spirit in the Hall, culminating in the ban of all returning Bowlesmen, who provide a sense of tradition and set the tone in this self-governing community.

And now the building itself is prized as an opportunity for profit as the Haas Business School hopes to take it over and turn it into an executive training center, with no concern for the loss of a great Berkeley institution, nor any respect for the spirit under which the building was originally given to the University.

A number of Bowles Alumni, led by Bob Sayles, are working to preserve Bowles Hall and the community they still cherish many years since their graduations. We call on all Bowlesmen to support us in this endeavor and join the Bowles Hall Alumni Association. To do so please contact us at BowlesHallAlumni@comcast.net.
